Santa Door Hanger Craft

A couple of weeks ago, Britany & I went to the Nutcracker Market. We saw this Santa door hanger. I thought it was so CUTE, but it was $35.00! I thought it looked like it would be pretty easy to make so I took a picture of it so I could remember it for later.

I needed a roll of canvas for this project so I went to Hobby Lobby. I bought the smallest & cheapest roll that my store had. (As you can see, it was still a huge roll of canvas that was pretty dang expensive, but I used a 40% off coupon so only ended up being $30.00)  I already had plenty of paint & ribbon, so the only other thing I needed to buy was polyfil. (It was $2.99)

The first thing I did was to make a pattern for my Santa. I did this by sketching each section of the Santa out on posterboard. I started with the fluffy part of Santa's hat. I drew it & cut it out & then I laid it on the posterboard & drew the hat around that piece so that they would be the same size. I did that for each section. Once all the pieces were cut out, I put them together like a puzzle & traced an outline around the whole Santa. Then I cut that out. (I had just taken down my Fall Fun for the Family poster, so I just used that piece of posterboard instead of buying a new piece. That's why there are random words on my Santa pattern, lol. And I only cut one eye & just traced it 2x on the face.)

Next I traced 2 Santa outlines on the canvas, one for the front & one for the back. Then I took a pencil (so that it could easily be painted over) and traced each section onto one of the Santa onlines.

Then it was time to paint Santa. (Make sure to lay something under the canvas because the paint will bleed through.) I painted all red first & then let that dry for about 5 minutes. Then all the white & let it dry. And etc... for each color.

When I was done painting, I let Santa dry for a couple of hours. Then I cut out both my Santas (the painted front & unpainted back.) Next I used a black Sharpie & traced around each pattern piece on top of the paint. (You could also use black paint, I just thought the Sharpie would be MUCH MUCH easier!!!)

I cut 2 strips of ribbon & hotglued them to the unpainted inside of each Santa.

Then I took some polyfil & put it between the 2 Santas & hotglued them together. Then I tied a bow with the 2 pieces of ribbon & that's it! Finished!!

I think it turned out just as cute as the one at the Nutcracker Market. And even though I still spent basically the same amount ($35.00) I've made more than one. We made 4 more at Make & Take Night & then I made 4 more for Addy's teacher. So 9 of them for $35.00 is around $4 each! And I still have a ton of canvas left. I'm thinking I can make something like this for each holiday. A heart for Valentine's Day, a shamrock for St. Patrick's Day, the Easter Bunny or an Easter egg for Easter, a flag for 4th of July, and a pumpkin for Halloween & Thanksgiving. And by the time I make all that it will probably be around $1 or $2 for each one!
